World Standards Day 2022

World Standards Day is celebrated annually on October 14th to recognize the experts developing international standards and spread awareness about the need for standardized regulations for consumers and industries in the global economy.

Why is a set of standardized regulations necessary? A key message from the World Standards Day site explains that international standards “help to harmonize specifications of products and services, making industry more efficient and breaking down barriers to international trade.” Essentially, the standards establish the trustworthiness of products and services to consumers through well-thought-out procedures and requirements.

“We believe that international standards are an important instrument for global trade and economic development. They provide a harmonized, stable, and globally recognized framework for the dissemination and use of new technologies.”

A group of industry leaders, NGOs, governments, and other stakeholders pulled together by the World Standards Cooperation (WSC) are the people behind the international standards. The group that pulls them all together, the WSC, is a combination of three leading organizations. International Organization for Standardization (ISO)International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) joined together to promote a shared vision for a better world.

That shared vision is the theme of a multi-year campaign launched in 2021. Shared Vision for a Better World encompasses World Standards Day and the overall journey to reaching the WSC’s Sustainable Development Goals. The goals focus on social imbalances, sustainable economies, and climate change. The World Standards day website asserts that “The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a shared vision for peace and prosperity, for people and planet. Every SDG is a call for action, but we can only get there if we work together. International standards offer practical solutions that we can all stand behind.”
